Get to know Sara Rose Gibbs

Sara author of memoir ‘Drama Queen’ and former satirical script writer on british comedy panel shows on the BBC radio and television such as Hazve I Got News For You, The Mash Report and Dead Ringers.

Diagnosed autistic in adulthood before she had been given many labels including drama queen, hence what inspired the title of her debut publication. This memoir of life to her autistic discovery references all the varying labels women get given before the one of autism in which highlights the gender inequality of diagnoses and representation and societal misunderstanding of autism and ableism and discussing her own internalised ableism. The book discusses big themes over caring for a dying relative and references to sexual assault.

She also has chronic illnesses in which the pandemic has helped her unmasked and changed her career direction. For the past several years since her diagnoses she has amassed a popular following on Twitter tweeting often about her autism and the experiences of autistic people advocating for the needs of herself and what in listening the interests of the community, she discusses her chronic illnesses, experience of being a jewish woman in modern Britain and her love for cats as well as random thoughts and notes.

She is very aware of the privilege as a white passing jewish woman in Britain to have the opportunity of publishing her story and know of others in her community have told their story of autism. She has made it clear that she wants the opportunity of other minority groups; people of colour and people of the queer communities in varying nations are given the opportunity to tell their story too. Her book has been read by her comedic peers Shaparak Khosandi, Isy Suttie and Rosie Holt

With Sara’s autism she is sensitive to light with her chronic illness also she can suffer from migraines and uses sunglasses in public spaces like in a writers rooms to television interviews. She has changed with her interview that the comedy script writer rooms aren’t the most accessible for disabled people with all not understanding light sensitivity issues with being autistic and having chronic conditions that cause migraines. Now she has found herself able to explore individual projects.

Later this year she will be publishing her second book after her memoir sharing relatable experiences to low support needs autistic but with chronic illness disabilities. Her next book is her first fictional writing which draws from her jewish identity. A romantic comedy set in the jewish holiday Hanukkah titled ‘Eight Bright Lights’
